Western Landscapes

These images of California were photographed over a period of two years mainly in the area of the Santa Ynez River Valley and its surrounding mountains, inluding Figueroa mountain and San Rafael.

I find the light in this area almost unimaginable. Some mornings I find it too intense even to work.

I particularly like to photograph landscapes when there is some water vapor in the air. This area has a lot of mist and fog in the mornings. Almost all of my landscape photography is done after dawn or just before sunset. The combination of low sun angles and mist make for great delicacy in an image and create opportunities to develop a special color palate.

Most of my work in this area is done in the early winter. Rain has begun to fall in this semi-arid area so green is beginning to return to the land, creating a beautiful contrast to the dominant sages, siennas, and browns. In may of these images I look to create a special color or effect in the sky that brings the foreground to life.
